Early Signs of Pregnancy

A late period is often the first sign of pregnancy.  You might also have tender breasts and stomach cramps – but this might be normal for you when you are expecting your period, so not a definitive sign.

You might also feel extremely tired, and queasy. Here is a list of the most common pregnancy signs and symptoms

  • No period
  • Nausea and vomiting ( morning sickness)
  • Increased sense of smell
  • Backache
  • Constipation
  • Swollen sore breast with darkening of the areola
  • Frequent urination (sometimes only passing an egg cup full)
  • Tiredness
  • Metallic taste in your mouth
  • Headaches
  • Food cravings
  • Food aversions
  • Constipation

A positive pregnancy test either a home style urine test or a blood test taken by your health care provider is the ONLY accurate way to determine whether you are pregnant.

On that note, a fairly new home pregnancy test is now on the market that can detect whether you are pregnant four days before your period is due. At first glance these are a great idea. However we have spoken to many midwives who work on early pregancy units who say that these style test cause alot of anguish as some women will test positive yet go on to have their period as the embryo fails to develop. Testing early would mean that many more women suffer a misscarriage where as before they would be having a period as normal.

If you decide to use a pre period pregnancy test and the result is negative - if you do not get your period you should re test as if you concieved late in your cycle there might not be enough growth hormone in your urine and you might have a false negative result.
