Vitamin B6 Does it Cure Morning Sickness?

Vitamin B6 Can Quell The Savage Stomach

In two studies conducted as far back as the 1940s suggested that vitamin B6 was a safe, effective treatment for morning sickness. Researchers at the University of Iowa College of Medicine concluded that women who were pregnant who ingested 25 milligrams of B6 on a nightly basis had significantly less nausea and vomiting than the control group who were given placebos. The study included 350 pregnant women and confirmed by a Thailand study who came to the same result at a lower dosage of on 10 milligrams every eight hours. Both studies discovered that vitamin B6 had a notable effect on women with moderate to severe nausea.

Jennifer Niebyl, M.D, professor and head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Iowa College of Medicine stated, "This is something more and more obstetricians are hearing about, and it's definitely worth trying."

It's speculated that women's hormones have something to do with the reason women suffer from nausea, and the effects of B6 on that symptom is equally mysterious. However, anecdotal evidence is significant enough to conclude that there is a marked improvement in the decrease of nausea and vomiting, and Niebyl recommends taking it first thing in the morning even before getting out of bed, repeating it mid afternoon and then again right before going to sleep. She does state that a woman should take no more than 75 milligrams of vitamin B6 per day in three 25 milligram doses. She warns that there can be nerve problems if dosages higher than 100 milligrams are taken.

If vitamin B6 is going to improve your symptoms, you should feel relief after the first few doses. If you don't feel any better, you may need to seek alternative forms of treatment.

As with all natural and homeopathic remedies, you should check with your physician prior to starting or adding any new supplements to your diet especially when you are pregnant.
