The Effects of Lifestyle & Environment on Morning Sickness.......

Smoking and drinking can make your morning sickness worse. This is a great time to stop if these are habits you regularly indulge in. Both smoking and drinking alcohol have a myriad of harmful effects on your growing baby.

Smoking moms and moms who drink large amounts of alcohol tend to grow smaller babies because these habits will interfere with your unborn baby’s growth. Nicotine decreases the amount of oxygen flowing to your baby through your placenta. Depriving your child of oxygen prevents normal growth. If you frequent bars or other places that may have a smoky atmosphere, you may notice your morning sickness gets worse while you’re there.

Stuffy, overly-warm places may aggravate your nausea. Keep your residence well-ventilated, and make sure your sleeping area is a bit on the cool side and as comfortable as possible. Use a fan if you need it. If the weather is hot, air-conditioning may help you feel better. If you don’t have one at home, you may want to go somewhere during the day that does have air-conditioning.

Once you figure out what triggers your morning sickness, try to avoid those situations. For some women, strong cooking odors can send them reeling to the bathroom. Close the kitchen doors if you have them, to prevent the smells from pervading the house. If there is no one else to cook, keep the kitchen well-ventilated. Turn on the fan above the stove and open windows if you can. Even if it is cold outside, opening the windows for a few moments can help clear out offending odors.
